Darker and more somber than the first but just as epic; less romance and more self destruction. Scenes with De Niro as young Vito Corelone really help to elevate the watchability of this sometimes plodding but excellent sequel.
prequel/sequel together again to "the godfather" novel by mario puzo. it an excellent both actor al pacino and robert de niro(both are most film together)role for the separte tales film with the one prequel with young vito corleone(robert de niro)/and then one with michael corleone(al pacino)who is the head of the family.
The Godfather films require stamina because of the length, at over 3 hours long, the film is not fast paced, yet elegantly created.
The introduction of De Niro in the flashbacks gave another dimension to the already established story, which I?m sure is contributory to most fans thinking this was the best of the Godfather trilogy.
It?s a must see for any fan of this genre.
I loved Robert Deniro in this. He was so awesome. Besides that though, I was rather confused by this movie. I wasnt sure what was happening or who certain people were at times. Also the ending was weird. I didnt feel like it concluded anything. I know that if I had been alive when this originally came out I would have been so mad with the ending, and then having to wait 15 years for the third one would have killed me.
"A sequel that surpassed the original", this is the historic statement about this brilliant follow-up to the Godfather. And yes, that statement is very true. A great example of methodical acting by DeNiro. Pacino's best performance.
One of the best sagas of all time. I love ANY mafia movie. The devotion and love of family is the core of the movie...
One of the best sequels I have ever seen. The entire cast was brilliant. Robert De Niro totally deserving of the Oscar for his role as the young Vito Corleone, and I loved the way it showed the two storylines. In fact, I probably preferred the Vito storyline to the Michael one.
Nonetheless, Al Pacino was great. Diane Keaton great as his wife Kay, although she really did so a horrible thing. But she thught she was trapped, I guess.
Finally John Cazale, a delight to watch. He's only in a few movies, and they are all great. I wish we could have seen more of him.
I loved the scenes in old Sicily. Great acting. Not as good as the first, it was a little dull in a few scenes, but still in the top 20 movies, ever!
My favorite of the Godfather triology, even though the first one is very close thanks to Brando. But here we have a brilliant Robert De Niro, a long with a lot of great actors and a continuing great story.
This was not even to be part of a sequel but it surpass the original in many ways. No wonder the film won 7 Oscars including Best Picture of 1974.
top 5 coppolas 2nd masterpiece has deniro taking over brandos spot as vito when he was young and his rise to power. deniro won his second oscar portraying vito doing hois whole performance in italian only speaking a couple of english words. the film overlaps young vito and present day michael as the new godfather. a classic like the first some going as far as to say its even better then the first
Whew,Made it through #2 everyone,I knew I was in for a long haul though.I really like this one too.I love how it did all the flashbacks to when Michael's dad was a boy in Sicily and how this all got started.Really good,Again,If you are one of the last few on earth that haven't seen this,I would bump it up on your list.Excellent!
This one adds a lot of story to the first one, before and after. Its kind of confusing in the beginning, but the story follows the original story, and also brings forth added drama.
Not as good as the first one, but Al Pacino is sure hot in this. Kay needs to kick him to the curb.
I really love the acting of Al Pacino but my love of his acting is only half the reason I love this movie so much. But i'm just saying that if you've seen the first part of the Godfather than this is just around 75% as good as the first. Marlon Brando might be half the reason but I don't know. The Godfatehr II has a lot of flashbacks and present parts. Al Pacino does a great job and so does the rest of the cast. Including Diane Keaton, John Cazale, and Robert De Nero. I really would recommend this movie to anyone who is okay with a violence, language, and a little sexual content.
WOW! This film is amazing in every way,the story's superb. We get the continuing story of Michael as he moves in on the Casino's in Nevada. We also get the the story of how his father came to America from Sicily from a young boy and his rise power. Both tails are interwoven together remarkably.
This is a great follow-up to THE GODFATHER.I have to give two big thumbs-up to Francis Ford Coppola who wrote and directed this. It's great how they show the young version of Don Vito Corleone, and Michael taking over as the don. This will always as the first one did, will always remind a american classic and masterpiece!!! Now I understand why this and the first won the award for best picture!!!
The movie is quite intresting at the beggining, but in that case the acting is just awful. The story is great but it's too long for keeping me wathing, so at the middle I left...
"Les segones parts mai són bones..."exceptuant aquesta gran sequela dirigida pel majestuós F. F. Coppola.
A man's hope for becoming a legit business man in society, constantly falls short of the reality of his community
A masterpiece, and the best sequel ever made. I loved the story of Vito Corleone's rise to power, juxtaposed with Michael's moral downfall. Brilliant.

It is hard to say....but I must be honest this is one case where the second film tops the first...the fact that this film reaches so far back in time to bring a whole new meaning to the story is compelling enough. Combined that with some great actors and you have a movie that will last for years to come.
Amazingly enough its better than the original. We voyage into the past and see how Vito (Robert De Niro) became the godfather. In the present time Michael ( Al Pacino) is going through some incredibly hard times, from an assasination attempt to being placed under investigation by the Feds. This movie is awesome, the more I think about it the more this movie stands out as a masterpiece. Who could ever forget the making of cinema history when Michael confronts his brother Freddo during a new years celebration...kisses him on the lips and tells him .." I know it was you Freddo".. goddamn that was friggin genius. My god Francis Ford Coppola was at the top of his game when he did this, not to mention Al Pacino & John Cazale. Seriously this movie is the reason to disconnect the phone, get some popcorn ready, some wine and watch the trilogy back to back.
I can't believe no one has commented on this!
It is a wonderful masterpiece!
It is one of the few movies I could keep watching over and over.
