Plot: An isolated spot in the middle of the sea. An oil rig, where all the workers are men, on which there has been an accident. A solitary, mysterious woman who is trying to forget her past is brought to t...( read more read more... )he rig to look after a man who has been temporarily blinded. A strange intimacy develops between them, a link full of secrets, truths, lies, humor and pain, from which neither of them will emerge unscathed and which will change their lives forever. This is a film about the weight of the past; about the sudden silence that is produced before a storm; about 25 million waves, a Spanish cook and a goose. And, above all else, it's about the power of love even in the most terrible circumstances.

ENGLISH: Intelligent movie. Raises awareness about recent tragic events without ever showing them, focusing instead on the meeting between a deaf nurse and a temporarily blind patient. From the soundtrack point of view, the scene where Antony and the Johnsons' music plays as we look at the oil rig in the middle of a stormy sea is great.

ITALIANO: Un film intelligente.

    Dear Sarah Polley,

You are a fabulous actress. But would you please, please, PLEASE, just once, make a fun, lighthearted movie where you get to smile, and I don't have to consider suicide? Thank you.

Josef: I thought um, you and I, maybe we could go away somewhere. Together. One of these days. Today. Right now. Come with me.
Hanna: No, I don't think that's going to be possible.
    Josef: Why not?
Hanna: Um, because I think that if we go away to someplace together, I'm afraid that, ah, one day, maybe not today, maybe, maybe not tomorrow either, but one day suddenly, I may begin to cry and cry so very much that nothing or nobody can stop me and the tears will fill the room and I won't be able to breath and I will pull you down with me and we'll both drown.
Josef: I'll learn how to swim, Hanna. I swear, I'll learn how to swim.

Its admirable convictions, matched only by the primitive manner in which they are expressed. Ms. Polley does flash a few moments of creative wingspan at us, but it doesn't save the picture from a certain kind of dread. The emptiness of uninspired creativity. A faithful companion to my own screenwriting process and as such, easy for me to recognize.
