Plot: Charlie Wilson was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His "Good Time Charlie" exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a de...( read more read more... )ep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan-which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians. Charlie's longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring, one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters). Charlie's partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos, a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them-Charlie, Joanne and Gust-travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, "Charlie did it."

''A boy is given a horse on his 14th birthday. Everyone in the village says, 'Oh how wonderful.' But a Zen master who lives in the village says, 'We shall see.' The boy falls off the horse and breaks his foot. Everyone in the village says, 'Oh how awful.' The Zen master says, 'We shall see.' The village is thrown into war and all the young men have to go to war. But, because of the broken foot, the boy stays behind. Everyone says, 'Oh, how wonderful.' The Zen master says, 'We shall see.' ''

A drama based on a true story of Texas congressman Charlie Wilson's covert dealings in Afghanistan, where his efforts to assist rebels in their war with the Soviets have some unforeseen and long-reaching effects.

Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson the woman loving, scotch drinking congressman. Tom Hanks infuses his character with life and fortitude.

Philip Seymour Hoffman as Gust Avrakotos the CIA man, as soon as he first appears in the film he boosts the acting and interest in the movie with his sheer ferocity and anger. Class acting from Hoffman as usual.

Julia Roberts as Joanne Herring had a limited screen-time but added some diversity and richness when in her few scenes.

The story was interesting and the politics flawless. The afghan's given RPG's to shoot down Communist civilian killing Choppers.

The emotional part for me was the camps and injuries of civilians in Afghan, and when Charlie visits, it opens his eyes to the suffering of a nation.

Some interesting points made. Although the ending was abit sudden, the shooting of the helicopters down while the Russians talk about relationships was too long and the audience's attention dwindles. These true stories seem to be churned out at a considerable rate these days.

A formidable tale to be told with depth, politics, tongue in cheek humour but slightly ultralistic in its American glorifying slightly right-wing propaganda.

A film to watch about one man's fight for justice and the crushing of human suffering.

If this movie had not been based on a true story i would have hated it, but well, its a true story so i guess it made the film xperience more interesting. It has some funny scenes, but its mostly dialogue, and i u cant stand movies with basically zero action dont watch it, but if u want to see how a single man defeated the USSR, this is the movie for u.

I wanted to see this, it looked so good. Tom Hanks was painful to watch as a Texan. Once you get past that, this is an aswomwe movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman gives a great performance, amoung others.

The target audience for this flick is middle aged Americans. So if you are from another country I don't expect you'll catch all the funny things Americans will find in this. It's not a comedy, but it has a certian amount of black humoer.

Aaron Sorkin's script is, not surprisingly, great, but everything about this film suffers by having the events of the film heavily truncated. I really hope there's a great 2.5-hour version of this movie somewhere.

December 2007 (Director: Mike Nichols) This is good movie making! Wonderful performance. Amazing performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman (Twister). I BELIEVED these characters & believed IN them. Ned Beatty stars as Defense Committee Chairman & Julia Roberts as a religious anti-communist lobbyist. Covert operations, good ol' boys & anti-communism.
