"of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she had to walk into mine." what a perfect movie. i just saw this for the fourth time and it was the best viewing yet. this film is cluttered with wonderful qoutes, great diologue, and an incredible plot. bogey and bergman are larger than life in this film and the rest of the actors really shine. i have read many critics reviews of this film and some try to think of something critical to say for the sake of being objective, in reality criticizing this film is futile. many consider this to be one of the top five films and unlike others in the top five, i can raise no objections here. this is easily one of the greatest films ever made without exception. as ebert once said, this is probably the most well recieved and reviewed film ever made and it deserves its aclaim. "heres lookin at you kid."
the most romantic movie ever that ive seen and In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine, exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining Czech underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Rick's surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa, Rick's one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. Well, that was their original plan. so a really gd old movie its one of the best romance movies ever
One of the all time greatest films featuring two of the all time greatest stars in unforgettable romance.
A story that has everything; Action, Romance, Intrigue, Heartbreak, and yes even a little Comedy thrown in...hard to believe that this film was actually being written and re-written during the actual production...and at one point was in danger of not even being made at all.
Brilliantly fluid direction by the great Oscar winning director Michael Curtiz who captured great performances from all his stars including the then very young Swiss actress Ingrid Bergman.
Filled with unforgettable moments and a timeless musical score this film will live on as one of the top 10 greatest films of all time....and watch it as it was meant to be watched...in fantastic "Black & White"!
I thought this movie was going to be pretty boring but the more I watched the more I got into it. That being said I don't understand why it's such a "classic", I mean it's not THAT good.
The best black and white movie I've seen. The editing is very good. Watch it, you'll love it.
The best black and white movie I've ever seen!
everything is just perfect, right, Sam? too many signature lines.. and that's what defines this movie as its best...
What a beautiful film. Classic lines, bretahtaking performances and a love story to die for. What more could you want? 10/10
this movie is too short! i wanted more.... this film is about romance, war-time tension among public. Would be listed among top 20 films of all time. We'll always have Paris!
...does she love him, or that other guy...was she for real back then in paris, did she really love him or...or...just who the fuck is victor lazlo anyway? she lets him know, but he is all too human and insists on hearing the stupid words as well...and it's not until he lies to himself that he "gets it", when he says, "it doesn't take much to see that..." when in fact it's taken him, well, since paris to see. we never really KNOW if anyone ever loves us...we have to trust, and this is maybe the only hollywood movie that leaves us with that...making it perfect.
Most definitely an entertainment rather than great in itself, Casablanca becomes great by the fact that the entertainment is so well made.
To me, this is the best movie ever made.
Even if you don't like classic movies, you should watch Casablanca, it's really worth it
"Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake." "I don't know what you mean, Miss Elsa." "Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By ." Only one of the countless memorable lines from this timeless film which can't be seen too many times. It remains timeless I believe because of its unpredictable ending. Humphrey Bogart was never better, and Ingrid Bergman is the perfect beauty to pair him with. The supporting cast is marvelous, lead by Claude Rains, in his best role. The direction is also one of the best. Michael Curtiz is the only director that comes to my mind that is as or maybe more versatile than Kubrick. This film is the pinnacle for him. The timing is perfect, and the feel so great and unpredictable. The film has everything in it from romance, to intrigue, to action, to comedy. My pick for the best film ever.
Memorable lines, a stupendous cast, a brilliant script, and a classic song all combine for one of the best films ever made. There are countless lines I can site that have become famous, but probably one of the most remembered, ?Play it again, Sam.? isn?t actually in the film. From Humphrey Bogart to Claude Rains to Ingrid Bergman to Sydney Greenstreet and so on the cast is jaw dropping and each offers their characters so much. Michael Curtiz, a director probably far more associated with such swashbucklers as The Sea Hawk and The Adventures of Robin Hood, was so versatile to be able to make such a multi-dimensional film and then make such film as I have mentioned and even make a much remembered musical. This is a film you can?t miss if you consider yourself any kind of cinema fan.
Technically this is undoubtedly one of the most beautifully crafted movies ever made. But for whatever reason, I thought I would have been more swept away by the story than I was. But who am I to diss on this classic?
Classic love story, no doubt. I thought it was very well made, great acting, and had classic memorable lines: "Play it Sam, play...As Time Goes By..." or "Here's Lookin' at you kid!" That's so catchy, even though it was said many years ago. The b&w cinematography is also very well put together, it felt like a film noir- even though it's really not.
Despite the fact that it played the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge (MA) forever, and is loved by all, I've always found this one of the lesser Bogarts. Pay no attention to me.
I always have trouble remembering how the movie goes after I see it, but I finally watched it all the way through. It was... interesting. I think I didn't catch all of it, but I think I remember it being a fairly interesting movie with parts I didn't remember being there. Maybe when I get older and understand it all I'll understand how it's supposed to be really great. Right now I'm still a little confused, but it was interesting.
I realy love the old films, this is one of the famous and lovly films with playing humphrey bogart!!
To my mind, Bogie's best. I have the original black & white version, as I feel that a lot of atmosphere was lost in the coloured film.
The well known lines and a terrific song (which was a flop when it first came out, becoming a hit when ressurected for the movie) help it to flow nicely.
One of my favourites.
Didn't think I would like this much as I'm not a fan of the romance genre. But this was amazing! It's what all romantic films aspire to be and always fall short of re-creating.
A fascinating relationship lies at the heart of this interesting and witty film about Resistance fighters seeking two transit papers to escape the Nazis, making it extremely watchable. Yes, that between Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Louis (expertly performed by Claude Rains). Sorry, you didn't think I meant the tedious and unbelievable romance between Rick and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), did you?
Bergman woodenly wafts about as a boring and unconvincing love interest who is supposed to have destroyed Rick's life and altered his entire personality. Since this is ludicrous, the makers have rammed in some clunky flashbacks to prove it, which unfortunately only demonstrate the lack of chemistry between Bergman and Bogart and stress a lack of skill in the writing department.
And speaking of the writing, the famous lines have been so abused by pop culture that they sound like gibberish in their original context.
Still, if you can ignore all that and get back to the wonderful stuff between Rick and Louis then there is a lot to be enjoyed here.
what can I say? I choke up every time Victor Laslo commands Rick's band to play Le Marseillaise....
Again, I know everybody puts this on their list. Just try to find a better plot...go ahead...I'm waiting...

It is a clasic i is the best romance of all time i could watch over and over again.just to here Borgart say heres to looking at you kid or you may not regret it today or not ever tomorow but soon and for the rest of you life.this is just so romantic.
Rick is my hero and Rick’s American Cafe is my good sample.
Music “ As Time goes By” is especially remarkable.
The two individuals who gave thumbs down to the suggestion "The English Patient" are fucking morons that can't compare a film for their life.
You don't need to thank me for such a blatantly obvious reminder.
