Nothing short of Amazing.I felt I owed this to my Dad who was in the Marine Corps. He was a Gunnery Sargent forever. He served in Both Korea and the Vietnam wars.He is still alive and ticking and got all his wits about him. After seeing as many war movies as I have I don't see how this man is still as intact as he seems.Anyway He is my hero always will be PERIOD.This movie was spine chilling.I loved it from minute one.Gosh the cast was not only stellar, but dam they were so young.I just don't know what else to say but dam if you haven't seen this one yet you owe it to yourself to do so.It really is something very special.

''I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight... razor... and surviving.''

During the on-going Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade Green Beret who has set himself up as a God among a local tribe.

Marlon Brando: Colonel Walter E. Kurtz

Martin Sheen: Captain Benjamin L. Willard

Robert Duvall: Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore

Apocalypse Now is another Vietnam movie that has achieved cult classic status.

Were treated to some of the best visuals in film depicting the horrors of Vietnam.
Martin Sheen does a good job as the lead however i was surprised at how little is facial expressions changed. Having seen Platoon with his son i was reminded of that too.

Theres also some great actors featured in cameos such as a young Harrison Ford, Laurence Fishburne and a brilliant Robert Duvall as a surfing fan Colonel Kilgore.
Marlon Brando took an age to appear on screen the soldier whos become a God in a village, his performance cannot be faulted with such a legendary actor. The result of the journey for Willard is to confront this man he respects and at the same time needs to reach an ultimate conclusion.

There's some great landscapes, music and shots. Playboy bunnies entertaining the troops only for them to get rowdy, Vietcong firing volleys of arrows and innocent civilians getting killed by uneasy troops. Vietnam antics depicted at their most volatile. There's even a cute puppy in the mix which is a contrast to the jungles chaos.

Going back to the songs and music it all seems to gel together and Apocalypse Now is another Vietnam War Movie that's got detail and deserves it's shining status.

The redux version that i watched was great although it was abit on the long side and i was flagging near to it's conclusion.

Still, in a word it's greatness hands down.

    ''Smell that? You smell that?''

    ''What?''

''Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.''

''I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...''

Absolutely astounding, this is arguably Coppola's greatest achievement as director and this is brought about through a war journey with much authenticity. Each facet of this film was handled with great care, cinematography is top notch, dialogue is rich, music and editing are well done, and the acting is sublime. Sheen gives a performance that highlights a man with mixed feelings towards his future which is conveyed to the audience through a variety of traits in the persona, Brando gives a good performance as the insane antagonist, the support cast is brilliant, and in my opinion Robert Duvall was underused - he was a true highlight. The only problem with this film is that in many parts it is very over-winded, whether that acts as a metaphor for the longevity of this journey or whether it was because I watched the Redux version. With that being said though this is a true must see film with direction at it's absolute peak.

In my mind one of the most overrated movies of all time. It's way too long and doesn't appear to have a beginning middle or end

For any actor to be able to transform a role into one that becomes one of those rare cinematic icons of American culture, is almost always a good indication of the strength of the performance behind it.
    Take Robert Duvall.
One of my favorite scenes is of Lt. Colonel Kilgore walking blithely around in the middle of blazing warzone as the shells, grenades & bullets exploding around him, while everyone else is shooting or running for cover. You can really tell the sincerty in his comment of liking the morning smell of napalm.
Which, BTW, is a view that I find myself not sharing.
And even though I've never actually experienced the smell of napalm in the morning,
I have been awakened on several occasions by the burning hot & almost equally as dangerous fragrance of my own farts.
Which, I can imagine, can't be all that much of a difference in experience.
Especially when the night before, I might've indulged in a midnight snack consisting of a huge steak sandwich with a layer of bacon on it.

Saigon... shit; I'm still only in Saigon... Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. I'm here a week now... waiting for a mission... getting softer; every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around, the walls moved in a little tighter.

Into the Heart of Darkness indeed.

Willard: "charging a man with murder in this place was like handing out speeding tickets in the Indy 500....."

A different kind of war movie. A Masterpiece. Horror should be included a genre.
